Southern Roots

Family history research in the Southern States.

Library of Virginia

I spent some time this evening exploring the Library of Virginia website. The Library of Virginia, located in the city of Richmond, is the archives which houses many of the historic records of Virginia. Their website includes descriptions of their collections, research policies and procedures, an online catalog search and more.

The staff can assist the researcher in learning about the resources that are available, but they cannot perform research for you. They do participate in Interlibrary loan and many of their records are on microfilm. They also maintain a list of professional researchers. One of their web pages is a guide to the “most useful” records for different time periods.

They also have some online resources: several indexes (marriage, obituary, funeral home records, etc) and a searchable collection of digitized Bible records. A great site to visit if you have roots in this area.
