Southern Roots

Family history research in the Southern States.

North Carolina Office of Archives and History

The North Carolina State Archives is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. They collect and preserve county records, state agency records, veterans records and non-governmental records. They have an online finding aid (MARS) that helps you see how the records are catagorized. As I was browsing through this catalog I came across some Revolutionary War records for a Whitmel Harrington. I’ll have to check this out because he may be one of my ancestors.

Records are available for onsite research. They will also respond to mail or email requests, as long as it is a specific request for a look-up in a specific record – no general research requests. There is a $20 fee for out-of-state researchers.
