Southern Roots

Family history research in the Southern States.

South Carolina Archives

The South Carolina Department of Archives and History is located in Columbia, South Carolina. They have a great collection of state and county records available for research and they have online guides to their collection. The website includes a page with information on genealogy research at the archives. They also have a collection of online, digitized records that the interested researcher can view, accessed by an online index. This includes records like Confederate pension applications and Colonial plats. They do offer a limited research service with an online request form. If they find the record you are looking for they will notify you of the cost for copies and after receiving payment they will fill the request. I did not find any explanation of their fees or if there was an additional fee for out of state researchers.
